Brief introduction to HH Bhakti Charu Swami Guru Maharaj

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami is a disciple of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, the founder acharya of ISKCON. His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami, ISKCON Guru and a member of GBC, was born in Bengal in 1945. His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami spent most of his early life in the city of Calcutta. In 1970, he left India to study in Germany. Coming across Vedic literatures while in Germany, he discovered the richness of India’s spiritual heritage. In 1975 he returned to India to wholeheartedly pursue the spiritual path.

After thoroughly studying the Vedic scriptures, His Holiness became aware of the need to find a spiritual master who could lead him on a sound spiritual course. After searching for one year without coming across a spiritual master to whom he could fully surrender, he felt despondent and disappointed. When he almost gave up his hope to find his spiritual master, he came across a book called The Nectar of Devotion by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

Becoming engrossed in the depths of that literature, he realized that he had found his spiritual master and the path for which he was searching. As he continued to read Srila Prabhupada’s works, his conviction grew stronger, as did his desire to meet Srila Prabhupada. At that time, Srila Prabhupada was in America. His Holiness joined the temple in Mayapur and became more involved in devotional service to the Lord, all the while awaiting Srila Prabhupada’s return to India.

When Srila Prabhupada returned to India at the end of 1976, the meeting between His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami and Srila Prabhupada finally took place. From their very first meeting, Srila Prabhupada gave His Holiness the assignment of translating his books into Bengali and made him his Secretary for Indian Affairs. Within only a few months, Srila Prabhupada gave him initiation into the disciplic succession and soon thereafter, awarded him the order of Sannyasa in 1977.

Along side his official responsibilities, His Holiness translated all of Srila Prabhupada’s works on major Vedic literatures, consisting of more than fifty volumes of books, into Bengali, as Srila Prabhupada had instructed in their very first meeting. Subsequently, he became a member of the Governing Body Commission of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and served as the Chairman of the Governing Body in 1989. Since then he is serving ISKCON as a Governing Body Commissioner and an initiating Guru.

In 1996, His Holiness took on the mammoth task of making a biographical video epic on the life of his spiritual master, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada. This video series, entitled Abhay Charan has been seen all over the world, as well as on Indian National Television. His Holiness is also developing projects in Ujjain, India. In February 2006, His Holiness constructed a beautiful temple in Ujjain. This is a very beautiful marble temple which is built in less than 10 months! The temple has three huge alters for the worship of Sri Sri Madan Mohan, Sri Sri Krishna Balaram and Sri Sri Gaura Nitai. This temple also have an Iternational Guest House, Govinda's Restaurant, Gift and Srila Prabhupada book shops, a Prashadam shop and a separate Jagannath temple where a Mid-day Meal praject is functioning. This project in conjugation with M.P. Government and ISKCON Ujjain feads more than 30,000 students. ISKCON Ujjain is also running various other departments such as Deity dress manufacturing, temple altars construction, Murti project which make deities of Srila Prabhupada and Guru Parampara. A primary school had already started to built up in ujjain and also multistory apartments are also going to be ready for the devotees all over the world to stay.

Bhakti Charu Swami Maharaj’s recent visit to South Africa

Bhakti Charu Swami South Africa 2013 (27)

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami Maharaja arrived in Johannesburg, South Afhrica on 12th April 2016 in the evening. Guru Maharaja was warmly welcomed by all the devotees. An ecstatic kirtan was lead by HG Nrsimhananda prabhu.

The next day Guru Maharaja gave darshan to all his disciples at the Sandton Office Towers. It was short but very intimate and everyone was spellbound by the nectar that flowed from Guru Maharaja’s lotus mouth. Guru Maharaja’s instruction was to take complete shelter of the holy name and gave the example of how during World War II when Japan wanted to bomb Kolkata, everyone was leaving except Srila Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada picked up his mrdanga and went out for harinaam fearlessly taking complete shelter in the holy name and the end result was that Japan did not bomb Kolkata.
Guru Maharaja gave a wonderful analogy of how a child wants to go and play in the field with his friends and asks his father and his father says yes and takes him to the field. The father sits on a bench while the child plays. The child is with all his friends playing and forgets his father. When the child wins he is happy and when he loses he is sad and this continues, he is happy and sad, he wins and he loses. Then, when it becomes dark all the children go home and the child is alone and scared and he remembers his father and his father holds his hand and takes him back home. Similarly, we are like the child and we have come to this material world and forgotten our father Krishna and are wining and loosing in our game but at the end Krishna will come and take us back home back to Godhead.
After the lecture, Guru Maharaja gave a kirtan and chanted the holy name with such surrender and love teaching us by example how we should take shelter of the holy name. Thereafter, Guru Maharaja took delicious prasadam cooked by HG Bhagavati devi dasi an expert cook, from her transcendental pots all the devotees enjoyed prasadam and there was enough for everyone including the guards of the building.
On 15th April 2016, Maharaja observed Sri Ramanavami festival, appearance day of Lord Sri Ramachandra, at ISKCON Pietermaritzburg. Maharaja gave an amazing festival lecture in the evening at the temple and also led devotees in the ecstatic dancing Kirtan.
Next day on 16th April 2016, Maharaja held a meeting for all disciples and aspiring disciples at HG Hemanga Chaitanya Das’s house. On 17th April 2016, Maharaja gave Sunday Love Feast lecture at New Jagannatha Puri Temple in Phoenix in the morning and then at Sri Sri Radha Radhanatha Temple in the afternoon. HH Kadamba Kanana Swami Maharaja was also present for the Sunday feast lecture.
On Monday 17th April 2016, Maharaja left from Durban to Dubai to go to Ujjain for the Kumba Mela. Guru Maharaja had a prime location at the Kumba Mela in Ujjain and constructed a dome just like Srila Prabhupada’s Samadhi in Mayapur and within that another dome which can seat 100 people. It is like a movie theatre but with reclining chairs. It was state of the art technology because it has 8 projectors and Guru Maharaja made two special movies, one on the History and Heritage of Ujjain and the other on Kumba Mela both would be viewed at the Kumba Mela in Ujjain.

April 22 – May 21
The Bhakti Charu Swami Bhakti Prema Swami Ujjain Kumbha Mela (1) celebration of Kumbh Mela takes place once in every 12 years. Ujjain is located at the bank of Shipra River in western region of Madhya Pradesh and is seen as one of the most sacred places in India. According The commemoration of Mela at Ujjain is known as ‘Simhastha Kumbh Mela’ in which the unique combination of divinity and purity is experienced when the crowd of ash-dubbed sages, priests, devotees gets fused together with the roaring of elephants and camels. People who witness the spiritual fest feel good fortune by their side and sense positive aroma purifying their souls and thoughts. University to host conference marking fifty years of ISKCON with Bhakti Charu Swami

University to host conference marking fifty years of ISKCON

On Saturday 23rd April, Bath Spa University will be hosting a conference to mark the first fifty years of the Hare Krishna Movement, also known as the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
One of the movement’s leading gurus, His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami, will be in attendance and there will be an opportunity to experience the arati ceremony where worship is offered, enjoy Indian dance and join in chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra.
A panel chaired by Suzanne Newcombe (INFORM), bringing together academics and devotees, will debate what happens when a New Religious Movement is no longer so new.
The keynote lecture will be given by Prof. Kim Knott (Lancaster University) who will focus on the movement’s achievements and challenges in a British setting.
Other papers consider the role of the movement in education (Rasamandala Das) and its place within the wider Vaishnava context (Dermot Killingley).
This conference offers an opportunity to assess how the Hare Krishna movement has changed in the course of its first half century.
Dr Catherine Robinson, Senior Lecturer in Religions, Philosophies and Ethics at Bath Spa University, said: “From controversial beginnings in the West where it attracted allegations of being a cult, it has established itself as a vital part of the contemporary religious scene with activities as diverse as feeding homeless people, ecological farming and workshops for schools alongside various forms of public witness and outreach.
“From humble beginnings in America in 1966, where Bhaktivedanta Swami had journeyed from India, the Hare Krishna movement has now become popular in the West and increasingly worldwide.
“By examining its origins and development, as well as offering some insights into the life of the movement, not least through sharing food, the conference will be a forum for reflection on the development of the Krishna movement and it’s made an impact in the world today.”
The conference runs all day from 10am – 6pm on Saturday 23rd April at Bath Spa University (Newton Park Campus).
Conference tickets are available online at

[BCS Istagosthi] Evening class in Brisbane at HG Janakraj Prabhu's residence on his birthday 26th December, 2012
Excerpts from the class.
• Krsna consciousness should be exciting, enriching, enlivening.
• How many come to listen to classes is not important how receptive they are is more important.
• energy + energetic together: Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
• energy and energetic separate: Radha & Krsna.
• In Goloka Navadwip they are singing the glories of Krsna, they are always doing Nama Sankirtana.
• Srila Prabhupada created Iskcon for us so that we have the perfect situation to practice our spiritual lives.
• Wherever we go we have devotees to associate with, worship alongwith, to read, chant and dance with. Therefore because of Iskcon we have these facilities.
• When spiritual master leaves, the family is still there, this is a family of Iskcon, we are never alone.
• Never think that Srila Prabhupada has left, he is always there. He is there in vapu and vani. Real aspect of spiritual master is vani or his instructions.
• When you are following spiritual master's instructions you are with him.
• When you are serving his vani then you are actually serving your spiritual master.
• Then someday if we become eligible to enter into the spiritual world then we will again be with the spiritual master.
• Spiritual master actually allures us to the spiritual world. When you serve the vani aspect, then you become qualified to enter the spiritual world.
• Death can come at any time, we must always be prepared. No regrets for the past always looking forward.
• A devotee's prayer is, "O my dear Krsna, please never let me forget you."
• Point from Nectar of Devotion which struck Guru Maharaj and he accepted Srila Prabhupada as his spiritual master.
1. Five kinds of liberation and Guru Maharaj knew only the negative one.
2. God is a person.
• Generally a devotee doesn't want to come back. Once bitten, twice shy.
• But to be a devotee also means to be surrendered to Krsna's will. I don't have any preference, or desire. If Krsna wants I will come back.
The class was followed by a staging of Ujjain DVD and then a sumptuous feast cooked by Sripati Prabhu, Vrindavaneshwari Mataji and others constituting Pizzas, Pastas and loads of ice cream
