July 9th was Guru Purnima day, the biggest parikrama day of the year. It was a hot day and very humid. But the pilgrims poured in, undeterred, filling the parikrama path from early morning to late at night, some of them carrying children or heavy bags throughout the 13 mile (21 kilometer) trek. The local newspaper estimated that 80 lakhs of people did parikrama! That’s eight million people! There were even helicopters offering aerial circumambulation of Govardhana and Radha Kunda for 2500 rupees a person. (That’s really very cheap for a helicopter ride) As you can see in the photos, the government blocked off all the possible entrances to Radha Kunda and Shyama Kunda to prevent potential accidents resulting from the crowd jostling each other in the water. For us, it meant lots of excitement, and lots more cleaning! We are happy to share with you that we will be expanding our prasadam distribution this month to locations in Varshana and Govardhana. As word is spreading that we have been steadily feeding the widows of Radha Kunda for so many years, residents of other areas have approached us to express a need for similar distribution programs in their locations.
