I have a very stupid question, however haven't received a satisfactory answer till date. :(
Its said that the first man/human being created in the Universe was Manu, the son of Lord Brahma and the purpose behind his creation was to populate the world with living entities. Now the question is:
Why GOD wanted to populate only living beings in the world and why human beings, why not something different? Also, if soul never dies and only goes from one form to another - how come the population of the world is increasing?
Furthermore, how are more and more souls being created in the world?

Only in the human form of life can one understand the true nature of his/her existence and his/her eternal relationship with Krsna. In no other form is this possible due to not sufficient consciousness and intelligence. Hence the human form is the only form fit to understand and contemplate on the question "Who am I?" When lord Brahma appeared on the lotus flower, the flower dint question "who am I? but lord Brahma did.
Hence getting a human form is not a bad thing nor is increase in population as if you look at it from a spriritual perspective, billions of jivatma are being offered another chance by Krsna to identify who they really are. Population explosion puts strain on people and resources, but krsna will provide for them, infact he has, its the humans themselves, chasing after globalisation, technological advancements and all non-nonsensical pursuits have made increase in population a big NO NO.

Soul is neither created nor destroyed. To the other question of population - there are many animal species that are extinct today and many more in the verge of becoming extinct. Now apply this observation to say from a big tree down to bacteria. :-) As indicated below, the soul only moves from one form to another form. The form is created and destroyed but the soul does not undergo any change and is eternal.
Per Bhagavatam, there are 84 lakh species (just the types!), out of which human form alone has 400K types!
Now no one knows the count of Jivas (Jivaatma) / the count of universes and hence, its believed to be 'infinite'.

It is not that God wanted to populate only human beings. When Lord Brahma made this universe, it was with all living forms and not just human beings. Manu was delegated the responsibility to increase the human progeny.
I guess only the human population of this world is increasing. Since there are many universes and one soul can transmigrate from one universe to another universe so it is possible that human population of this universe may be increasing because souls are getting human bodies after leaving animal bodies or coming to this universe from other universes. Many other possibilities.
As far as I know, new souls are not created. All souls are eternal.

Hence, in short - All SOULS under any universe are eternal form of Krsna and shall attain HIS abode if and only if they realize the deeper meaning of the purpose of their form, realize that this human cycle of birth, disease, old age, and death is all ILLUSION/MAYA. Till they (Human Beings) don't realize the science of transcendence, their inner being, their purpose to be on Mother Earth, its impossible for anyone to go back to GODHEAD.

Souls didn't ever created, they always existed.
When wave knock the rock , then the small drops of the water become visible. Soon as they fall back in the ocean, they become invisible again. The bigger such waves makes more drops visible, but that doesn't mean quantity of all drops changed. Similar to that, living beings become sometimes visible and sometimes not, but quantity of souls never change.
