Hare Krishna!

Please accept my humble obeisances.

All glories to Shrila Prabhupada.

We know that due to some circumstances, to spread Sri Cahitanya Mahaprabhu's mission all over the world and as per his Guru's instruction Shrila Prabhupada had to avoid some strict rules of Hari Bhakti Vilasa - by Sanatana Goswami.  However, the question is, do we also need to avoid it now onward? or should we start to follow it? I'm seeing it is still being ignored i.e. in Hari Bhakti Vilasa text-51 says that,

"If a famous brähmaëa spiritual-master is present in one's own district, a person who desires auspiciousness will not travel somewhere else to accept initiation from someone other than him."

So here in ISKCON, may be spiritual masters do not have their fixed accommodations because they are sanyasis, but we have some area covered where a specific ISKCON Sanyasi preaches. Isn't it mandatory for us to accept initiation  from such a Sanyasi who's covering our area if he's strict follower and satisfies all the standers of a good spiritual master other than going to other area or country for initiation?

Do forgive me for the mistakes if I have made in the above question.

  • Hare Krishna,

Thank you for such a good response. I know and I agree with this, but my question is that, should we ignore the statements of Hari Bhakti Vilasa which was written by Sanatana Goswami?

    Hare Krsna Prabhuji,

    PAMHO.

We should take initiation from someone who inspires us, in whom we get the confidence that this person will take me back to Godhead, whom we can trust and surrender to. Srila Prabhupada's disciples have imbibed one quality each (atleast) from him. You have to see what is your mood - which guru signifies that mood and what service inspires you.

To determine who should be your guru, you should pray very sincerely to Srila Prabhupada and Krsna to reveal your guru to you. At the same time, you should hear the lectures of different gurus, you can access on youtube, mayapur tv, vrindavan tv, books. You should study the life of the gurus and see who inspires you.

It is a very personal decision and one has to follow one's gut feeling, heart, direction from SP or Krsna, as the case may be. One should not keep physical condition like how the guru looks, walks, talks, which country is his body from into consideration.

Regarding physical proximity, yes that is a factor to some. In the sense that some gurus are accessible online, so physcial proximity doesnt matter. For other gurus, who are not that accessible online, the physical proximity may be a factor. That again is a personal decision one has to take, how important is physical proximity vis a vis other factors mentioned by me above.

    Best of luck. Haribol.

    Your servant,

    Radha Rasamayi DD

        Hare Krsna Prabhuji,

        PAMHO.

Yes. We should follow Srila Prabhupada. NoI also talks about Niyamagrah - we should not be so caught up following the rule that we forget why it is there in the first place.

        Haribol,
