  • Muchrooms grow in darkness and are thus in mode of ignorance and thus cannot be offered to God. Even common hindus outside ISKCON know this. I have never seen mushrooms being served at other hindu temples.

  • Hare Krsna,

Mushrooms CANNOT be offered to the Lord

    Hope I answered your question.

    yrs,

    Tamal Krsna

  • There are many many things which can be offered to Krishna, and which don't have any "controversy" involved. So why not give up our predilection for one particular food and be free from mental traas!

Also we shouldn't be longing much for taste as CC tells us :

" jihvaar laalse yei iti uti dhaaya,

    sishnodar parayana Krishna naahi paaya"

One who runs here and there for the pleasure of taste, bound by belly and genitals doesn't get Krishna.

  • Hare Krsna!

So, I think you are right. Opinions do not matter, what matters is supreme knowledge of our founder acharya Srila Prabhupada yes?

    so please read this:

    http://www.vaniquotes.org/wiki/Mushrooms_are_generally_not_offered,...

    Haribol!

    • Supreme knowledge comes from Supreme God -Krishna.

Bg 17.10 — Food prepared more than three hours before being eaten, food that is tasteless, decomposed and putrid, and food consisting of remnants and untouchable things is dear to those in the mode of darkness.

Anyway, gaudi vaishnavas do not eat food which cant be offered !

Considering all that, you can realize that the restriction on mushrooms cant be crossed, except in starvation and absence of anything else.

  • Hare Krsna to all,

Just wanted to add a one note to those who think mushrooms grow in a filthy place. Many eatible mushroom varieties require sterile conditions to grow and their growth depends on very specific conditions which include the right combination of light, humidity and moisture... So just wanted to share with those who keep saying that grow in a filthy place - it is not true for all mushroom varieties (and there are too many to count). Having harvested mushrooms my whole life I found that most fungi grows in very clean places... Some such as chanterelle smell very nice as well (have a flower fragrance).. And some even grows in cow dung... :)

After some research I found that Srila Prabhupada did not prohibit mushrooms in a diet however offering then to dieties is questionable still as I believe some still do... Also what's to say about musrooms if some offer cows milk that comes from tortured cows that are about to be killed? Did you know that these days farmers impregnate cows and then take away the calf and kill it (for soft meat), and they do it also just to collect the extra milk from the mother cow due to the cow givng birth? Very heartbreaking... I mean this is the cow business in US and many people do not know that and offer that same milk to their deities at home simply because they do not know... So in other words we should pay attention to more than just saying that it is ignorant to offer mushrooms (which mostly prefer to grow in sterile environments), if we do not always know the full story of all the foods we offer... The best way out of ignorance like that is knowledge and full information.

I hope this brought some awareness and inspiration for finding full disclosures on the foods we consume, the sellers we buy the foods from, etc..

    Haribol!
    • Hare Krsna... Yes you are right supreme knowledge comes from BG or SB or other holy scriptures.. However our founder acarya Srila Prabhupada is so much more knowledgeable in these texts that i would not doubt his words. Moreover, the above reference BG 17.10, it does not specify mushrooms. Mushrooms are not decomposed or tasteless - that is an Opinion of some people but not others... It is true that we do not "generally" offer these to dieties, but Srila Prabhupada's words took mean only so much as you are willing to have faith in on your personal level...Many varieties of mushrooms have different tastes and smells and can be collected fresh... Not sure why come people classify them as decomposed... In addition one is not really supposed to taste with their toungue, so i wouldnt make an argument about the taste... There is nothing More or Less decomposed about mushrooms than anything else, this goes for any type of food really...

Hope this clarifies my comment and intent. I just would like to follow what Srila Prabhupada has taught us, because he understood holy Scriptures better than we ever will...

      All Glories to Srila Prabhupada

      Haribol!
