Haribol devotees, PAMHO
Perhaps some of you could help me with this... I wrote a little scenario to illustrate the problem. Perhaps some of you can relate to this ;-):
Maya: "Hey look! I have this great opportunity for you. This is the opportunity you've always been waiting for to satisfy that desire you always had. Why don't you take advantage of it?"
Devotee: "No thank you, I'm doing really good in my bhakti and I don't want to lose momentum."
Maya: "yes, but this opportunity might not come again, and anyways, this time is different. This time it's really going to be amazing! You need to take advantage of this opportunity. You can always pick up with your bhakti where you left off later ;-)"
Devotee: "I can't think about this ..please, leave me alone."
Maya: "Okay I'll make you a deal: you try it this one last time, and then I will leave you alone. Just try it this one last time and then you can forget about the whole thing and be "clean and sober" the rest of your life! Promise. This will be the indulgence to end all indulgences. Really. Just see how hard it is for you to take your mind off of this thing. You won't be able to think of anything else even if you try. I mean really, how can you be expected to be abstinent ALL the time? It's impossible, it's unreasonable, it's unfair! So come on, just enjoy yourself for a little bit. You've been working so hard and you deserve to relax and have some fun once in a while. :-) "
Devotee: "argh... I ... shouldn't .... this is so wrong. .. *sigh* well....okay, maybe I'll just kind of do it a little bit.... I mean at least I TRIED not to .... that's got to count for something right?"
Devotee: ".... that's it? That's what I was getting all excited about? argh, I feel so gross. I swear I'm never doing this again. *sigh* I guess I'll just have to try to get back on the bhakti train...again. "
[Go back to beginning and read again...... ad infinitum]
So my question is: how would you talk back to maya in this scenario? Where is the flaw in the devotee's thinking and how should this devotee interupt this cycle so that they don't keep reinforcing bad habits?
thank you.... so interesting.
I will think about this.
PAMHO.AGTSP. This is the most common way maya tricks.. Everyone of us might have experienced.. Best way is to develop higher taste,,, chanting, reading..,, keeping busy in KC.. When we are in an ectasic keertan maya will never dare to come near.. same way.. keeping busy in KC..
:D so nice to hear Devotees being happy!
Hare Krishna dear Devotees, please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
Srila Prabhupada told that we should not joke with Maya Devi. She is very, very strong. She is the energy of Krishna. Because of that we should follow strict Vaishnava etiquette. And no need so much to talk with Her. Better we chant even on mind the Holy Names - talk with Krishna.
Material desires will grow when we think of them. It is very difficult to control ourselves. Better to use our senses not in negative - avoiding something but in positive things.
As like Sanjay Prabhu told engaging our senses with spiritual things. When we need association we have to go to Devotees, when we are hungry we eat only Prasadam...
No need to talk with her much.
When sometimes we are far from Devotees material desires show their real face. That time it is very difficult to control the senses. Because of that we should try very much to be in the association of Devotees.
And if we can not be in the association of Devotees then the only way is pitifully cry for help. It is the only way. Pitifully cry for help.
Determination and spiritual strength comes when we control our tongue. Food and speech.
Wow, thank you. I hadn't thought of it that way!
Better to use our senses not in negative - avoiding something but in positive things.
yes. i agree
The flaw here is that the devotee gave some time for thinking about maya.
Whenever Maya attacks the best defense is not to say "yes" or "no"...When maya proposes a plan, we have to say "Later".
If we say "no" to maya directly, it will attack with more power. We should be so much engaged in service of Krishna, that when maya proposes a plan, we should say "i will satisfy you later, right now i am busy in Krishna's service"...then when she comes again with a proposal, again you re busy in Krishna's service and again say "Later"..
This is called Haridas Thakur formula. We can learn so many things from our acharyas and their pastimes.
Right. . very helpful. thank you
What a nice discussion this has been !
It sure is true, this circular method that Maya tries on us. And what to do?.. be involved in Sri Krsna's service, so when Maya tries to "get us" we can tell her... "I'm busy with the Higher Things, don't bother me, Maya."
This thread has been helpful to me. The 'conversation with Maya' that you put up at first, Daniel, was a conversation I've heard in my head before, too.
Just knowing that other devotees face this scenario and the different ways they deal with this 'struggle', heartens me in my continuing devotional development.
Thanks for the clever and useful Post, Daniel. Hare Krishna!
Thank you so much for your replies. This is very helpful to me
the flaw is "I mean at least I TRIED not to .... that's got to count for something right"
when i TRY to do things my confidence is shaken even before starting the particular thing ...
I know :-P It's just "stinking thinking"
Dont worry Krishna gives determination to them who sincerely ask for it.
Pray for me so that i can fulfill my unbreakable vow
That's encouraging... Thank you :)

Oh, I apologize!
I used a term that is common in addictions self-help groups here in North America. I think it just means faulty or incorrect reasoning.
It wasn't directed at your post... I meant that my mentality that it's okay if I act wrongly because at least I TRIED not to do it is "stinking thinking."
Sorry for the confusion!
Hare Krishna and thanks for you input and advice :-)
This is wonderful.....................
I will have reading material for a long time now.
